Ten things I wear on repeat

August 28, 2026

A few years ago I counted the things I actually reached for and found it came to about ten. Everything else in the wardrobe was hanging there out of guilt, habit, or the vague hope of a life I was not really living. Letting most of it go was the quietest relief.

What stayed earned its place honestly. A pair of trousers that go with everything, two jumpers worn soft with washing, a white shirt, a good coat, boots I have resoled twice. None of it is remarkable, and that is the point — a small wardrobe is not about having beautiful clothes so much as having no wrong choices in front of you at eight in the morning.

The part nobody tells you is how much attention the remaining pieces get once they are the only ones. I mend a seam rather than replace the whole thing. I know which jumper wants hand-washing and which coat needs its buttons checked before winter. Caring for ten things you love is far easier, and far more satisfying, than managing fifty you merely tolerate.

Buying less did not make me care about clothes less; it made me care properly, for the first time. Getting dressed stopped being a small daily negotiation and became something closer to a habit I look forward to — reach, wear, and get on with the actual day.
